Introduction — Anybody Can Take a Picture. Not Everybody Can Make One.

My goal with this e-book is not to make you a professional photographer. It’s to take you from an amateur photographer to an advanced amateur photographer.

There’s a difference between taking a snapshot and making a photograph.

A snapshot is what happens when you point a camera at something and press the shutter. A photograph is what happens when you stop, look, and make a few small decisions on purpose.

You already have everything you need to make a great photograph. The camera in your pocket is more capable than the gear most professionals used twenty years ago. What separates a snapshot from a photograph isn’t the equipment. It’s the attention.

I’ve been a photographer for more than forty years. I’ve captured an image of 189 heads of state at the United Nations. I’ve photographed over one million people in my career, including over 1200 weddings and events. I launched one of the first online sports photography businesses in the world. And the single most consistent thing I’ve learned is this: most of the “bad” photos people take aren’t bad because of the camera. They’re bad because nobody stopped to think about three or four small things before pressing the shutter.

This e-book is built on that insight. Every tip inside is small. None of them require new gear, expensive software, or hours of practice. Each one is a consideration — something you can do in the seconds before you take the shot that turns a forgettable snapshot into a photograph worth keeping.

If you apply even a handful of these, your photos will look different. Sharper. More balanced. More intentional. And more like the way you actually remember the moment — not just what was in front of you, but what it felt like to be there.

A note to the reader. Throughout this e-book, you’ll hear me talk about tips that cross over between smartphone photography and DSLR photography. The principles are the same. Use your creative mind to see where each tip applies — and how you can use it with either camera type. If a tip is smartphone-specific or DSLR-specific, I’ll call it out. Otherwise, assume it works on both.

Tip #1 — Clean Your Lens Before Every Shot

The shortcut: Before you take a photo — every photo — pull the corner of a soft, clean cloth (a t-shirt hem, microfiber, even your shirt tail) across your lens. One pass. Two seconds.

Why it works: Smartphone lenses live in pockets, bags, hands, and against your face. Every time your fingers touch the lens housing, they leave a thin film of skin oil. That oil diffuses light, scatters highlights, kills contrast, and creates a hazy, soft look that nobody can identify but everyone notices. The phone’s auto-exposure then brightens the shot to compensate, which makes the haze worse. You end up blaming the camera when the fix was a free wipe.

How to use it in practice:

Before any important shot — wipe. Wedding, vacation, your kid’s first school play, that sunset you raced outside for. Two seconds wipes five minutes of “this photo is blurry, and I don’t know why.”

Carrying a cloth — a microfiber cloth in your pocket or bag is the cheapest upgrade you’ll ever make in photography. Keep one in your car too.

Don’t use your shirt’s main body — the body has more grit and dust. Use a corner or a sleeve cuff.

Check your lens at night — point your phone at a bright light source after wiping. If you still see a halo or a haze, wipe again. Fog means oil.

The principle behind it: Lenses are the single most important part of any camera. A clean lens on a phone will improve your images every time. Hygiene is the photographer’s first habit, not their last.

Take action now: Pull out your phone right now. Wipe the lens. Take a photo of whatever is in front of you. Compare it to the last photo you took today. Notice the difference.

Tip #2 — Turn On Your iPhone Grid (Rule of Thirds)

The shortcut: On your iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Grid and toggle it on. You’ll now see four faint lines splitting your screen into nine equal boxes — the rule of thirds grid.

Why it works: The rule of thirds says a photo feels more natural and visually balanced when the main subjects sit on the grid lines or at the four intersections (the “power points”), instead of dead center. Centering everything is the most common amateur mistake — it makes photos feel static and flat.

How to use it in practice:

Horizons — line up the horizon on the lower third line so the sky fills two-thirds of the frame (or vice versa for moody, low-angle shots).

Portraits — place the subject’s eyes along the upper third line. This puts the face in the “right” spot for the brain to read it as natural.

Off-center subjects — put your main subject on one of the four intersections, not in the middle. Leaves breathing room on the opposite side.

Leading lines — roads, fences, shorelines should run along a third-line, not through the center.

The principle behind it: Human eyes scan images in thirds, not halves. When key elements land on the intersections, the viewer’s gaze moves naturally across the frame instead of getting stuck in the middle. It’s the difference between a snapshot and a composed shot.

Take action now: Open Settings, turn on the grid, then take three photos with the subject on an intersection — you’ll feel the difference in five minutes.

Tip #3 — Look at Your Screen (What You See Is What You Get)

The shortcut: Before you press the shutter, scan the entire frame — not just the subject. Look at the four corners, the edges, the background, the floor, the space behind the subject. Whatever is there is what will appear in the picture. What you see is what you get.

Why it works: Most amateur photographers point the camera at the subject and press the shutter without ever looking at the rest of the frame. The result is a portrait of grandma with a trash can in the background. A family photo with a lamppost growing out of someone’s head. A product shot with glare from a window behind the camera that washed out the entire image. A landscape with a power line cutting across the sky. None of those problems had anything to do with the camera. They happened because the photographer only looked at the center of the frame instead of the whole frame.

A more advanced photographer looks at the entire image before they press the shutter. They scan the perimeter. They notice what’s behind, above, and beside the subject. Then they decide — is this frame clean enough, or do I need to move?

How to use it in practice:

Scan the four corners. Look at every corner of the viewfinder or phone screen. Anything bright, distracting, or out of place in a corner pulls the eye away from the subject. Step sideways a foot or two and re-check. Often that’s all it takes.

Look behind the subject. Most amateur mistakes live behind the subject, not in front of them. A tree growing out of a head. A bright sign. Another person walking into the frame. Move so the background reads clean — a wall, open sky, foliage, blurred distance.

Watch for glare and lens flare. If you’re shooting toward the sun (or a bright window behind you is reflecting into the lens), you’ll get haze, glare, or rainbow streaks across the image. The fix is to change your angle so the light source is to your side or behind the subject, not behind the camera or in front of it.

Floor check. On a portrait, look at the floor of the frame. Is there a cable, a toy, a shadow that doesn’t belong? On a product shot, is the surface clean? On a group photo, is anyone cut off at the knees (which always looks awkward)?

Reposition yourself. This is the advanced move. When something in the frame is wrong, don’t take the picture. Walk to your left or right. Crouch. Stand on a chair. Wait for the person in the background to move. Change your angle until the frame reads clean.

The principle behind it: The frame is a window. Everything inside that window will be in the picture. If it’s in the frame, it’s in the picture. If it’s not in the frame, it’s not in the picture. The advanced photographer reads the frame like a checklist — subject sharp, background clean, edges clear, light where it needs to be — and only commits to the shutter when the frame reads right.

When you do that — when you take the time to look at the edges, reposition, and frame the picture properly — people look at the image and say, “Wow, that’s a nice image. Thank you.” That’s the goal. That’s the difference between a snapshot and a photograph.

Take action now: Take a photo of anything. Before you press the shutter, force yourself to scan the four corners and the background. Find at least one thing you don’t want in the picture. Move until it’s gone. Then take the photo. Do this five times today. By the fifth one, you’ll be doing it automatically.

Tip #4 — Choose the Right Orientation (Vertical, Horizontal, 9:16, 16:9)

The shortcut: Before you take the shot, decide the orientation based on what the subject is — and where the image will live. Vertical (9:16) for portraits, video, and social feeds. Horizontal (16:9) for groups, landscapes, and anything wider than it is tall. Turn the camera on purpose, not by accident.

Why it works: The end result is what makes the difference. A vertical frame makes a single person or a tall subject feel tall, intimate, and present. A horizontal frame gives a group, a landscape, or any wide subject room to breathe. Shooting the wrong orientation wastes half the frame — your subject looks cramped, or your background swallows the picture. It’s not a creative choice before you’ve thought about it; it’s a default.

How to use it in practice:

Vertical (9:16) — portraits, one or two people, social posts, stories, reels. When the subject is taller than it is wide, hold the camera vertical.

Horizontal (16:9) — groups, landscapes, dinner tables, sports, anything wide. When the subject is wider than it is tall, turn the camera horizontal.

Match the platform. Stories, Reels, TikTok, and Pinterest are vertical by default. YouTube, websites, and most “wallpaper” style images are horizontal. Pick the orientation the platform needs before you shoot so you don’t lose a third of the frame to cropping later.

Move your feet, not the zoom. If you feel you’re not close enough, walk closer. Zooming in past the optical range of the lens means the camera is just cropping the image for you — and you lose resolution and sharpness. Always be at the “normal” viewing length of the lens. What you see is what you get. Crop later if you have to, but never trade your pixels for a fake zoom.

The principle behind it: Orientation is the first compositional decision, even before you think about the rule of thirds. A great photo in the wrong orientation gets badly cropped later. The result is what matters — frame it for the result you want.

Take action now: Pick any subject in the room. Shoot it vertically. Now shoot it horizontally. Compare the two. Then crop the horizontal one vertically and the vertical one horizontally. Notice how much of the image you lose to bad cropping compared to choosing the right orientation in the first place.

Tip #5 — Have Your Subject Look Left (The Direction of Reading)

The shortcut: When you can choose, position your subject so they’re looking to the viewer’s left — not straight at the camera, and not to the right.

Why it works: Western eyes are trained to read left to right. The viewer’s gaze enters a photo from the upper-left corner, sweeps right, and naturally wants to follow whatever direction the subject is facing. When a subject looks left, the viewer’s eye lands on the face first, then keeps moving into the negative space ahead of them — the photo feels open, intentional, and forward-moving. When the subject looks right, the viewer’s gaze hits the side of the head and bounces out of the frame. The image feels closed and unfinished.

How to use it in practice:

Portraits — ask your subject to turn their head and eyes to their right (or stand to their left so the camera sees them turned that way). Leave more empty space on the left side of the frame.

Environmental shots — same rule. If a person is sitting at a desk, walking down a street, or looking out a window, frame them so the space they’re looking into is on the viewer’s left.

Action and motion — cars, runners, animals, anything moving — leave more space in the direction of movement (the “lead room”) so the subject doesn’t feel trapped against the edge.

The principle behind it: This is the same logic as leaving “headroom” for a news subject. The viewer’s eye needs somewhere to go after it lands on the face. Look-left gives the eye a path. Look-right cuts that path off.

Take action now: Take two photos of the same subject — one looking left, one looking right. Compare them side by side. You’ll feel the difference immediately.

Tip #6 — Matching Light Direction to Subject Direction (The Reading Loop)

The shortcut: When you’re doing a natural light portrait, the subject looks to the viewer’s left (Tip #2). The light should come from the left side of the frame — the same side the subject is looking toward. So the light is hitting the side of their face that’s turned toward the camera, and the side that’s facing the light source is also the side the viewer reads first.

Why it works: Three things are happening at once in a portrait, and they all need to point the same direction:

The subject is looking to the viewer’s left (Tip #2 — direction of reading).

The light is on the viewer’s left — meaning the side of the subject’s face that is lit is the side the viewer sees first.

The reader’s eye enters from the left and follows the light across the face.

When all three align, the impact is enormous. The viewer enters the frame, sees the lit side of the face first (because that’s where the eye lands), reads the subject’s gaze direction (also left), and follows the light into the negative space ahead of the subject. The whole image flows in one direction — the natural direction of reading. This is why portraits with light on the wrong side of the face feel slightly off, even when the viewer can’t name why. The reading loop is broken.

How to use it in practice:

Window light. Position your subject so the window is on their right side (the viewer’s left side, as we look at the photo). Their right side is lit; their left side falls into soft shadow. They look to the viewer’s left. The light wraps around the face from the camera’s left side.

Outdoor light. Stand your subject with the sun on their right side (your left as the camera). If the sun is too harsh, move them to the edge of a tree line so dappled light comes from the left. Open shade with light spilling in from the left is the most flattering natural light there is.

Light coming from the wrong side? Don’t fight it. Move the subject. Walk around the room or the yard until the light source is on your left as the photographer (which is the viewer’s left in the final image). Light direction is the easiest thing to fix in a portrait and the most overlooked.

The reverse version (for a different mood). Some portrait styles — fashion, editorial, dramatic — break the rule on purpose by putting light on the opposite side of the gaze. The face is half in shadow, gaze goes one way, light pulls the other. It creates tension. It’s a deliberate choice, not a default. The reader still senses the loop — it’s just looped against itself.

The principle behind it: This is the secret of editorial and advertising portrait photography. The pros are tuning the light to the reading direction of the eye, not just to the face. You don’t have to know why — you just have to know that when the subject looks left, and the light comes from the left, the portrait feels more powerful every time. The eye, the gaze, and the light are all moving in the same direction. The image reads as one motion.

Take action now: Find any window. Sit a friend on a chair facing the camera. Take three photos: light from the left, light from the right, light from straight ahead. Have them look to the viewer’s left in all three. The first photo will feel right. The second will feel wrong even though you can’t explain why. The third will feel flat. That’s the reading loop. Now you can’t unsee it.

Tip #7 — Change Your Angle (Break the Five-and-a-Half-Foot Default)

The shortcut: Stop shooting everything from standing eye-level. Move the camera. Get low. Get high. Make the angle a deliberate choice — not a habit.

Why it works: We go through life looking at the world from a five-and-a-half to six-and-a-half-foot level. That’s where our eyes sit when we stand up. Every photo we take from that default position looks the same as every other photo of that subject anyone has ever taken. The result is a sea of images that all look like they were shot by the same person standing in the same spot.

The moment you change the angle, the world transforms. A flower from below shows its stem and the sky behind it. A car from a foot off the ground looks powerful and grounded. A child’s face from their own eye level feels intimate and respectful, not top-down. Architectural details, food, water, animals, products — all of them transform when the camera moves.

How to use it in practice:

Get low. A foot off the ground for cars, products, animals, kids at play, water, sports. Low angles make subjects feel monumental, grounded, and dramatic.

Get high. Stand on a chair, a balcony, a curb. Shoot down on a dinner table, a product layout, a city street, a small subject you want to put in context.

Match the subject’s eye level — for people. When photographing a child, get down to their eye level. When photographing an adult seated, sit down. When photographing a working artisan, get to wherever they’re working. Eye-level portraits feel respectful. Top-down portraits feel like surveillance.

Know when NOT to do it. Shooting up at a person from below can distort their body and face — noses widen, chins recede, bodies look stocky. Do it on purpose, for effect (hero shots, dramatic editorial), or don’t do it on people at all.

Use the midpoint rule to keep perspective true. When you’re photographing a product or an interior — anything that has a defined top and bottom — place the camera at the vertical center of the subject, not where your eyes happen to be. A four-foot-tall car? Shoot from two feet off the ground. A ten-foot-tall room? Shoot from five feet. Shooting from the midpoint keeps all the vertical lines straight and the perspective true to what your eye would actually see. This is the rule that makes real estate listings and product catalogs look “right” — and most people get it wrong by shooting too high or too low.

The principle behind it: Photography is a three-dimensional medium recorded in two dimensions. The angle you choose is one of the strongest signals of intent in the entire frame. A standing eye-level says “I didn’t think about this.” A chosen angle says “I made this picture.”

Take action now: Pick any object in front of you. Shoot it from standing height. Then shoot it from a foot off the ground. Then shoot it from above with your arm fully extended. Keep all three shots. The object is the same. The photos are three completely different pictures.

Tip #8 — Photography Works the Same on a Phone or a DSLR

The shortcut: Don’t let gear anxiety stop you. Every tip in this e-book — composition, lighting, exposure — works just as well on a smartphone as on a DSLR with a $5,000 lens. The fundamentals are the same.

Why it works: Photography is an art and a science. The art is composition: where you put the subject, how you use lines and shapes, what you leave in and out. The science is exposure: how much light the sensor records, how motion is captured, how color and contrast are preserved. When you blend those together — composition, lighting, and exposure — you make a beautiful image. None of those three things requires a particular camera.

A smartphone today has more computing power than the cameras I used to photograph heads of state. The phone is doing exposure decisions, focus, color, and noise reduction in milliseconds. You are still doing the composition. That’s the part that matters, and that’s the part this book is about.

How to use it in practice:

Phone first. If you have a phone, you have a complete camera system. Use it. Learn on it. The muscle memory of seeing the photo before you press the shutter transfers directly to any other camera you pick up later.

DSLR when you need it. A DSLR with interchangeable lenses gives you control over aperture, shutter speed, focal length, and depth of field — useful for sports, low light, wildlife, and portraits. But that’s not “better” — it’s different. Same composition, same lighting, same exposure principles.

Same three pillars, every time. Before any shot, ask yourself: What’s my composition? Where’s the light? What’s my exposure? If you can answer those three questions, the camera in your hand is the right camera.

The principle behind it: The gear doesn’t make the photographer — the eye does. The eye can be trained on any camera. Once you see the photo before you take it, the gear just records what you already decided.

Take action now: Put your phone down. Pick up any camera — DSLR, mirrorless, point-and-shoot, whatever you have. Take the same photo with both. Compare the composition, lighting, and exposure. The differences are smaller than you think. The similarities are what matter.

Tip #9 — The Eye Is the Same Aperture (Your Body Already Knows This)

The shortcut: You’ve already used an aperture your whole life. It’s the iris in your eye. Every time you squint to read something far away, every time the sun makes you narrow your eyes, every time a person without glasses can read a menu by holding it close and squinting — that’s an aperture working.

Why it works: Look around the room right now. Open your eyes wide. Now squint them down to small slits. Two things happen at the same time:

The world gets sharper. When you narrow your eyes, more of the scene snaps into focus. The far wall is clearer. The text on the chalkboard at the back of the room is more readable. That’s the same thing a small aperture (high f-stop) does in a camera — it expands the depth of field, the distance that’s sharp.

The world gets darker. Less light reaches the back of your eye. That’s the same thing a small aperture does in a camera — it cuts the light.

Now open your eyes wide. The screen gets brighter (more light), but the slice in focus gets thinner. Backgrounds blur. Distances soften. That’s a wide aperture (low f-stop) — same as a portrait lens at f/1.8.

How to use it in practice:

The squinting kid in the back of the classroom. You’ve seen it a hundred times. That child is squinting to read the chalkboard, not because they’re straining — they’re closing the aperture of their iris down so the chalkboard snaps into focus. They’re doing the same thing a landscape photographer does at f/16. Their body is running the same physics as the camera.

The person who forgot their glasses reading a menu. They hold the menu close to their face and squint their eyes very small — they’re shrinking the aperture AND extending the depth of field so the menu reads sharp at that close distance. Two aperture tricks at once, done instinctively.

Walking out of a dark theater into bright sunlight. Your pupils shrink. That’s your aperture closing in real time to match the light. The camera’s aperture does the same job.

Photography uses the same exact system. Once you see that, the whole f-stop concept stops being technical and becomes obvious. The eye is the camera. The camera is the eye. The rules are the same because the physics is the same.

The principle behind it: Photography copied the eye. The eye has been running an aperture, a lens, a sensor, and exposure control for hundreds of millions of years. Every f-stop on a camera is just a mechanical version of what your iris does naturally. You already know how to use an aperture. You just didn’t have the vocabulary for it.

Take action now: Stand in any room. Look at the closest thing to you, then the farthest. Notice how you can shift focus between them by squinting (closing the aperture) — everything snaps sharp at once. Now open your eyes wide. Pick just one distance to focus on. The other distances blur. That’s depth of field. That’s f-stops. That’s photography.

Tip #10 — F-Stops and Apertures: How They Control Light

Try this right now. Squint your eyes down to a small slit and look across the room. The world gets sharper. The depth of field grows. Now open your eyes wide. The world softens. The depth of field shrinks. That’s an aperture. Your body already knows how photography works — you just didn’t have the word for it.

The shortcut: On any camera that lets you choose the Aperture (DSLR, mirrorless, and some advanced phone modes), the f-stop number you pick controls two things at once — how much light enters the lens, and how much of the scene is in sharp focus. Lower f-stop = more light + blurry background. Higher f-stop = less light + everything sharp.

Why it works: Inside every lens is a hole that gets bigger or smaller. That hole is the aperture. The f-stop is just a fancy way of describing how big or small that hole is. Here’s the trick that confuses everyone the first time: a small f-stop number means a big hole, and a big f-stop number means a small hole. It’s backwards from what you’d expect, and that’s why people stumble on it. The “f” stands for the lens’s focal length divided by the aperture diameter — the math works out so that as the hole gets bigger, the number gets smaller.

The three things the aperture controls:

How much light gets in. Bigger hole (f/1.8, f/2.8) = lots of light = good for low-light, indoor, evening, night shots. Smaller hole (f/11, f/16) = less light = good for bright sun, snow, beach.

How much of the scene is in sharp focus (depth of field). Bigger hole (low f-stop) = only a thin slice of the scene is sharp; the background falls off into blur. This is what gives portraits that beautiful “professional” look — sharp face, soft blurry background. Smaller hole (high f-stop) = more of the scene, near and far, is sharp. This is what landscape photographers use to keep the foreground rocks and the distant mountains all in focus.

How much starburst you get from light sources. Tiny apertures (f/16, f/22) turn point light sources — sun, streetlights, candles — into starbursts. Bigger apertures just glow.

Two rules to memorize:

Bigger opening = less depth of field (or what I call distance in focus). The wider the aperture, the thinner the slice that’s sharp. The face is in focus, the background is not.

Smaller aperture = more depth of field, sharper overall image. The narrower the opening, the more of the scene reads as sharp. The smaller the hole, the more things show up in focus from near to far.

The f-stop scale, in plain English:

f/1.4 – f/2.8 — wide open. Lots of light, very thin slice in focus. Portraits, low light, blurry backgrounds. Hard to get everything sharp.

f/4 – f/5.6 — middle of the road. Good all-purpose range. Sharp subject, slightly soft background. Where most general photography lives.

f/8 – f/11 — small hole. Most of the scene is in focus. Landscapes, group photos, architecture, products. This is the sharpest range for most lenses.

f/16 – f/22 — pinhole. Everything in focus. Bright sun, snow, long exposures. Watch out: very small apertures start to soften the image due to diffraction (the light bends around the tiny opening). Don’t go past f/16 unless you need the starburst.

How to use it in practice:

Portraits — wide open (low f-stop, like f/2.8 or f/4). Blur the background. Make the face pop.

Group photos — middle (f/5.6 or f/8). Keep everyone sharp.

Landscapes — small (f/8 to f/11). Keep near and far sharp. Don’t go past f/16.

Bright sun on snow or beach — small (f/11 to f/16). Cut the light so the photo isn’t blown out.

Low light indoors or evening — wide (f/1.8 or f/2.8). Let as much light in as possible.

Starbursts from light sources — very small (f/16 or f/22). Point lights turn into stars.

The principle behind it: The aperture is the volume knob for light, and the depth knob for focus rolled into one dial. Once you see those two controls as a pair, you stop being a button-pusher and start being a photographer. You choose how much light you want and how much of the story you want in focus. The shutter speed and ISO handle the rest of the exposure equation.

Take action now: Pick up any camera that lets you set the aperture (DSLR or mirrorless in “A” or “Av” mode, or a phone with a “Portrait” or “Pro” mode). Photograph the same subject at f/2.8, f/8, and f/16. Three photos, same subject, same light. Notice how the brightness changes AND how much of the background is sharp. That’s the f-stop doing two jobs at once.

Tip #11 — The 3-2-1 Rule: Don’t Lose the Photos You Just Learned to Make

The shortcut: Make three copies of every photo you care about, on two different kinds of media, with at least one copy stored off-site. The 3-2-1 backup rule is the professional standard for protecting digital files, and it works just as well for vacation photos as it does for a commercial shoot.

Why it works: Photographs and images are a very important part of life — along with video — and so often we don’t think about making sure we don’t lose them. A phone gets dropped in water. A laptop gets stolen. A hard drive fails. A cloud account gets locked. A natural disaster wipes out your home. Any single one of those events can erase every photo you’ve ever taken. And the cruel part is: you never miss it until they’re gone.

The fix isn’t complicated. It’s a habit.

How to use it in practice — the 3-2-1 method:

3 copies. The original on your phone or camera. Two more backups.

2 different kinds of media. Don’t keep all three copies on hard drives — a single power surge can take them all out. Mix it up: phone + computer + external drive. Or phone + cloud + external drive. The two kinds of media are the insurance against a single point of failure.

1 off-site. At least one copy lives somewhere physically different from the others. Cloud storage counts. A small portable hard drive in your safe-deposit box counts. A drive at a relative’s house counts. If your house floods, your cloud copy survives. If your cloud account gets locked, your safe-deposit-box drive survives.

The exact workflow I use (smartphone example):

Cloud backup first. Make sure your phone is set to auto-upload to a cloud service (iCloud, Google Photos, Dropbox). This is your “off-site” copy by default.

AirDrop to my computer. On a Mac, I AirDrop the photos I want to keep onto my computer. Now I have a local copy on a different device.

External portable hard drive. Once a month (or after any major shoot), I drag the photos from my computer onto a small portable hard drive — the kind that fits in a pocket.

Safe-deposit box. That portable drive goes into my safe-deposit box at the bank. Off-site, climate-controlled, secure. If my house burns down tonight, my photos survive.

For DSLR shooters: Same logic, slightly different steps. Import the SD card to your computer. Back up the computer to an external drive. Mirror the external drive to a cloud service (Google Drive, iCloud, etc). Rotate one of the drives off-site periodically.

The principle behind it: Storage is cheap. Memories are not. A 2-terabyte portable hard drive costs less than a dinner for two. A cloud subscription costs less than a coffee a month. The cost of protecting every photo you’ll ever take is trivial compared to the cost of losing them. The barrier isn’t money — it’s habit. Build the habit and you never have to think about it again.

Take action now: Open your phone right now. Pick your ten favorite photos from the last year. Where are they right now? If the answer is “only on my phone,” you have one copy in one place. That’s the risk. This weekend, do the 3-2-1 thing once. After that, set it on autopilot and never worry again.
